This is the Uttarakhand's largest tribe. In 1967 the area of  JAUNSAR-BAWAR was declared as tribal area and the prime reason behind this was the upliftment of this area's people who were lagging behind due to adverse geographical and political condition of this area. And today it's impact can be realized from the fact that Jaunsari people are providing their services in various state & central  government's sectors across the country.

The river Yamuna is locally known as Jamuna and the region other side of Jamuna in locality was known as jamunapar which  later became Jaunsar while in west the river Pabbar separat Himchal from Uttarakhand hence this region was named on this river (Pabbar) which was known as Bawar.

Jaunsar-Bawar came under Tehri Estate(riyasat) but as this was peripherial part of Garhwal Riyasat so it was also under Sirmuar rulers, later Garhwal king took it back to his Riyasat and after 1814 war with GURKHAS british conquered it with Dehradun. These people trace their origin PANDVAS of MAHABHARATA and RAJPUT of Rajashtan.

Jaunsar has it's own unique culture and their culture even dosen't match with rest of state's  Garhwal & Kumaon while we can see some glimpses of sirmuri and Himachali embedded in their culture.Their society generally divided as khaush, koli, dhaki, dom and lohar.
